An affirmation is a short positive statement that when repeated has the ability to help make positive changes in one's life. I like to think of affirmations as a way of re-programming the mind. By the time we reach adulthood we have so many negative statements (or voices) running around in our head. Voices that chide us and tell us we are not good enough or not safe. Unless we come to the realisation that we do have these voices in our head, and that they are not helping but serving to make things worse, they have a tendency to sabotage our attempts at a happy and fulfilled life.
Affirmations are a useful tool in going about changing or re-programming these negative voices. I think everybody would prefer to hear encouraging words from their peers rather than negative or downputting statements yet when it comes to the voices in our head most people remain stuck and almost satisfied with the negative ramble that ensues.
How many times have you heard yourself say "I just can't do it" or "she could never love me" or "I am just not good enough". We don't want to hear these things from our friends and peers but seem so happy to accept it from ourselves. What we tell ourselves is far more powerful than what others tell us. It is like we have settled for degrading ourselves in the hope that someone else might have something nice to say about us.
What we focus on or think about it is what expands in our life. Would you prefer to think that you are successful (regardless of your circumstance as success is really just a state of mind) or as a failure which is so self defeating and ulitmately a destructive thought and force in many people's lives.

I have always had a keen interest in the mind and the metaphysical. I studied psychology at the University of New South Wales in Sydney, Australia and it is there that I met and fell in love with the double bass. I found that the formal study of the mind did little to help me understand myself or how to better myself. I became more and more involved in music (to the detriment of my studies) and it is this passion for music which ulitmately led to a more keen understanding of the mind and how to improve my life.
After graduating in 1986 I became involved in the Sydney jazz scene and since that time I have played and toured with many successful bands and artists including Dale Barlow, Bernie McGann, Ten Part Invention, Errol Buddle, George Washingmachine, Wanderlust, DIG, Frank Bennett, Martin Plaza and Gyan. I have performed all over the world including two performances at the prestigious Chicago Jazz Festival, The Kennedy Centre for Performing Arts (USA), Ruhrfestspiele (Germany) and jazz and music festivals throughout Australia.
I am self-taught and I sing and play double bass, saxophone, flute, guitarron (Mexican bass), electric bass and guitar. My solo CD features myself both singing and playing the double bass. It is available to purchase online.
My interest in affirmations was originally fostered by my introduction to Louise Hay, which I am sure most of you have either read or at least heard of. Although I was at first a bit skeptical of what she wrote about I knew in some way it rang true and started practicing affirmations and visualisation. My life is not perfect and I still have a long way to go and grow but I honestly believe that affirmations are a wonderful tool for improving my life and attitude towards my life. How we percieve our lives is really the ulitmate reality that we live in so I think it is much better to perceive life as something great not something to just get through.
